2015 Hattenheim Schützenhaus Riesling Kabinett
After an exceptionally dry summer, the grapes were 'saved' by rain in August, with great late ripening, making this single vineyard Riesling juicy and approachable yet effortlessly elegant. It reflects how beautiful a fresh citrus-pear fragrance and creamy green apple can light up your day. Zesty lime pith and lemon notes abound in this lively Riesling. It's feather-light in body yet radiant, offering loads of pristine tangerine and apricot flavors.
The producer is the renowned VDP wine estate Balthasar Ress. Founded in 1870 by the Rheingau Hotelier Balthasar Ress, the wineestate numbers among the large, family-operated enterprises in the Rheingau today. Consistently high standards of performance and reliability have been hallmarks of the estate since its founding. Today the estate is run by Stefan and Christian Ress, who represent the fourth and fifth generations of the founding family.
The 2015 season began with a settled spring of warm weather. The summer brought record heat that persisted all the way to September. With the vintage teetering on a knife edge, perfectly timed and much needed dose of precipitation came in early September. The result: healthy, golden-yellow berries with 92°-100°+ Oechsle readings and sensational fruit aromas.
West of the village Hattenheim, the Schützenhaus site faces south-southwest and rises in altitude from 328 feet above sea level (slightly sloping) to about 492 feet. The “VDP Erste Lage” site is relatively long and slopes toward the west, thereby protecting it from cold easterly winds. The name probably derives from a vineyard hut (“Haus”) for the vineyard “keepers” who watched over the vineyards prior to the harvest. The vineyard “guards” (“Schutzen”) used blank cartridge pistols to ward off starlings from munching on the tasty sweet grapes. The soils consist partly of deep loess and loess-loam, and partly of Tertiary marl mixtures. They are able to store considerable water reserves and ensure the vines’ water and nutrient supplies, producing wines with high extract values.
The grapes were selectively harvested by hand.
Spontaneous fermentation and ageing take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with as little exposure to oxygen as possible, in order to preserve fruit aromas.
Alcohol: 9.5% by vol.
